About

Well,

From the ashes of an earlier food blog that stagnated due to Real Life Nastiness, I have decided to un-earth another foodblog. Think of this as the rounds between 1 and 2 of Punchout, perhaps against Piston Honda, and I’ve held the select button the entire time and rev’d myself back up to full health.

I have a tiny apartment in Kits where I chug out food. I’m entirely self taught and would love some formal training but that’s just not in the cards. I own some ok equipment, some good knives (and GET a good knife people!), and I dabble in a bit of everything. I have monumental failures from time to time –the failed ham experiment of Nov 07 was a particular painful one mostly due to the retarded amount of money I sunk into it. I like getting in over my head. I own a crappy digital camera and the lighting in my apartment sucks, so I apologize in advance of the photos. But hey, you get the idea.

The idea came from the fact that I like cooking for my friends, but I’m broke. So I usually get them to chip in some money to help out with the food, bring some wobbly pops or a bottle of wine, etc. The first time I did this I made a three-course fixed-price meal (no substitutions! no vegetarian option!) for four in my tiny apartment (aka: I only have 4 sets of plates/little plates/bowls that match) on a Sunday. Thus, fixed-price Sunday’s was born. I mean, I cook other things on other days, which you will probably hear about more.

I live in Vancouver and am a 25 year old M.A.Sc student (Geological Engineering) who happens to be a little crazy about food. I’m fiercely passionate about local/organic/ethically raised/etc, but only when I can afford it. This city is expensive and trust me, science-based master’s isn’t bringing in the big bucks. I have a good butcher, an ok fish-monger, and quite a good city to pick ingredients from. I cook a bit of everything but I have a fondness for the oldschool –anything requiring scandalous amounts of butter or fat. I prefer to make most things from scratch, even if it’s pointless, or it takes a ridiculous amount of time. I like to eat, despite being a skinny beanpole (blame running / swimming / cycling / stick-fighting / fencing / skiing and a host of other things I happen to do in life).

Oh.  And rocks are cool:
